This past April, we celebrated what would have been Kevin Sutherland’s 33nd birthday. On July 4th, we marked the 9th year without his smiling face in our lives. It’s is hard to imagine that that much time has passed, but every year, we rededicate ourselves to carrying on the work he left behind.

December 3rd, 2024 is Giving Tuesday.
“Now more than ever, we need young people following in Kevin’s footsteps - pursuing careers in public service for the right reasons. We hope you will consider making a Giving Tuesday donation to support the KJS Legacy Project as we work to extend Kevin’s legacy - still searching for that more perfect Union!”
Nine years ago, Kevin’s family and friends turned tragedy into action endowing a scholarship at American University to support students pursuing a degree in public service. They endowed a Capitol Hill internship to give students real-world experience in government service. And two years ago, they came together to create the KJS Legacy Project Foundation to expand on those efforts to provide greater support to even more students. In 2023, we created an annual scholarship at Kevin’s high school in Trumbull, Connecticut to support a graduating senior who is planning to pursue a degree in Government, Public Affairs, or Political Science. And next summer, we will expand our initiatives to include support for a summer student/faculty research project as part of the American University Public Affairs and Policy Lab.

Our scholarship recipients are making us proud. Some are still pursuing their degree. Some have gone on to law school. And some have already worked in important government agencies in Washington, DC.
Already, we have awarded seven scholarships and four internships. This support is changing lives and it is creating a family that is connected to the example that Kevin set before his life was cut short - a family dedicated to carrying on Kevin’s work of being in public service for the right reasons. Perhaps you knew Kevin - perhaps you were in school with him or perhaps you were one of his co-workers on Capitol Hill or The Lone Star Project or New Blue Interactive. Perhaps you only read about him, but have been inspired by his dedication to moving toward that more perfect Union our Founders mentioned in the Preamble to the Constitution. Or perhaps you simply want to support the next generation of leaders in defending our democracy and helping America truly live up to our ideals. Our internship recipients have gained real-world experience working on Capitol Hill.
Whenever we speak to students who we are supporting, we hear how Kevin’s life-story has inspired them to make a difference in this world. They have all dedicated themselves to carry on the work Kevin intended to do. As Kevin inspires them, they are now inspiring us to work even harder to expand our support so even more students can make a positive impact on our society.
Our Trumbull High School Scholarship recipients have entered college pursing careers in political science and international studies. In the coming years, we seek to endow this scholarship so that it will provide perpetual support for generations to come.
