Today, the KJS Legacy Project closes the books on our third year working to extend the legacy of Kevin Sutherland and working to support students who are following in his footsteps. 2024 has been a turbulent year in public service. Both domestically and internationally, the world is changing at breakneck speed. More than ever, our nation needs young people to step up and take on leadership roles as the torch is being passed from the Baby Boom generation to Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. Kevin was a millennial, born in 1991. His formative years were characterized by great technological change and then by the tragedy of 9/11 and the following years of unending wars. Those events shaped his worldview and inspired him to seek a career in public service. We will never stop wondering what Kevin would be saying and doing today, but we know that he would be actively working to to make this world a better place - our mission is to support the next generation to dedicate themselves to do the same thing.

Each Generation is called to do their part!
“…we know that democracy is always an unfinished creation. Each generation must renew its foundations. Each generation must rediscover the meaning of this hallowed vision in the light of its own modern challenges.”
— Pres. Jimmy Carter, Farewell Address, January 1981.
Through your generous support this year, we were able to increase the endowments that fund the American University
KJS Memorial Scholarship for students in the School of Public Affairs (SPA) and the Kevin Sutherland Internship which supports students seeking real-world experience interning on Capitol Hill. We funded the second Trumbull High School Kevin Sutherland Memorial Scholarship for a student starting college pursuing a degree in Government, Public Affairs, or Political Science. Inspired by Kevin’s example and supported financially by the KJSLP, these students are dedicating themselves to making a difference!
Next summer, we will add a new initiative providing a sponsorship to support two SPA students to stay in DC over the summer to work with a faculty member in the SPA Public Affairs and Policy Lab. They will be doing research and producing a case study related to criminal justice. We’ll have more to say about this project in the future.
We know this has been a challenging year with so many good causes that need our attention. Each year we are working to expand our reach and our impact. If you can make an end-of-year donation, the first $1000 will be matched 1-for-1.
