Recognizing & Encouraging Public Service

In 2017, the Trumbull Democratic Town Committee in Kevin’s hometown created the Kevin J. Sutherland Inspiration in Democracy Award to recognize and encourage a dedication to public service by young people in the community. Each year, an award plaque is created using one of Kevin’s iconic photographs. The award is presented to an individual or individuals who have demonstrated the characteristics expressed by American University President Neil Kerwin in honoring Kevin on August 30th, 2015:

“…a deep commitment to undertake hard work without regard for the rewards of recognition or even immediate personal gratification that might be gained.”

    2022 Co-Awardee

    Molly received the 2022 KJS IIDA for her leadership, activism, and engagement in local civic and community activities. She was a member of the Trumbull High Model UN Team and as a member of the We the People Team, she helped bring home Trumbull’s 26th State Championship and a 10th Place finish in the national competition

  • Satvik Bagawadi-Ellur

    SUSTAINABILITY DIRECTOR

    Satvik received the 2022 KJS IIDA for his leadership and engagement in local politcs - specifically working on the 2018 and 2020 State Rep. campaign in Trumbull. He was a member of the Trumbull High Model UN Team and as a member of the We the People Team, he helped bring home Trumbull’s 26th State Championship and a 10th Place finish in the national competition

  • Madeline Marsh

    Madeline received the 2021 KJS IIDA for her participation in civic activities at Trumbull High and in the community. She was a member of the Mock Trial Team as a freshman, was a member of the We the People team her senior year that finished 1st in the state and 9th nationally, and she volunteered on the 2020 campaign of Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox.

    The 2021 KJS IIDA plaque was create from a photograph Kevin took in the spring of 2012 of the Washington Monument with cherry blossoms in full bloom.

  • Will Haskell

    Will received the 2020 KJS IIDA for his years of involvement in public service starting as a teenager. Will volunteered on the campaigns of Jim Himes and Chris Murphy and later interned in their DC offices. He came out of college at age 22 to launch a grassroots campaign for State Senate defeating a 20-year incumbent to become the youngest member of the CT General Assembly.

  • Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox

    Sujata received the 2019 KJS IIDA for her years of dedication to democratic principles as an attorney, law professor, member of the DTC, and candidate for the General Assembly That run in 2018 fell a bit short against a three-term incumbent, but it demonstrated the power of hard work and a positive message.

    The 2019 KJS IIDA plaque was created from Kevin’s 2011 photograph of the Washington Monument lit up with the 4th of July fireworks on the National Mall.

  • Michael Wright

    Michael received the 2019 KJS IIDA for his tireless hard work on the 2018 campaign of his co-awardee, Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox. Michael knocked on over 7000 doors, made countless phone calls and with no prior political experience, he became the lead organizer and volunteer trainer for the campaign.

    Ashley received the 2018 KJS IIDA for her work as a non-profit consultant, a member of the Trumbull Town Council, her hard-fought run for State Representative, and her dedication to building a better future for our children.

    The 2018 plaque was created from Kevin’s 2015 photograph of the Jefferson Memorial at sunset.

  • Matthew Kuroghlian

    Matt received the inaugural KJS IIDA as a junior at Trumbull High School for his dedication to public service through his work to engage students in local and state elections, his work on Congressman Jim Himes’ campaign, and his work with the Trumbull Board of Education.
