AU Kevin Sutherland Internship Recipients

The Kevin Sutherland Internship Fund was established by Kevin’s co-workers at New Blue Interactive to honor Kevin’s interest in helping his fellow AU students pursuing work in public service. As someone who saw the value in Capitol Hill internships from his own experiences, Kevin recognized that these often low or unpaid internships were available only to the fortunate few who could afford it. This fund helps provide support for students who came to DC to make a difference and who seek real world experience working on Capitol Hill as interns.

“The Kevin Sutherland Internship has given me the invaluable opportunity to both grow academically and professionally, while lightening the financial burden on me and my family. Through this internship, I was inspired by how the power of politics and policy-making permeates every aspect of life and perhaps, more so, the underserved community. As a School of International Service major who is focusing on Human Rights, the opportunity afforded to me to assess and propose support for legislative initiatives was eye opening. I am incredibly proud to be a part of Kevin’s legacy to make a difference in the world through public service. Receiving this scholarship has meant so much to me and, in Kevin’s honor, I will continue to be an advocate in all spheres of life, especially for the underserved community. I am so appreciative for being selected for this internship.”

“The Kevin Sutherland Internship allowed me to continue doing internship work while getting my undergraduate degree, and not having to be so stressed over whether or not I could afford lunch or dinner during my days of study and work. I have found a passion for education policy and reform, which I hope to continue being an advocate for in every way possible. Kevin sounds like he was a wonderfully brilliant, bright young man with a love and passion for helping others. Receiving a scholarship in his name inspired me to continue that fight for him.”
