Our Goals & Objectives

Kevin Sutherland touched the lives of so many people in his short 24 years. To honor his memory, many of them have helped to endow an American University scholarship fund and a government internship fund. Kevin’s congressman and mentor, Jim Himes, has created a summer internship stipend in his name to provide real world experience on Capitol Hill for those who might not have that opportunity. In Kevin’s hometown of Trumbull, the Democratic Town Committee has created an award in Kevin’s name to recognize and encourage young people who have demonstrated a love for community and pubic service. The goal of the KJS Legacy Project is to expand on these endeavors to provide even more opportunities for those following in Kevin’s footsteps.

Expanding AU Academic & Work Opportunities

Through our fundraising efforts, we will seek to increase the KJS Scholarship and Internship endowments at American University so that more students can receive greater support in their pursuit of careers in public service.

Establish a Trumbull High School Public Service Scholarship

Through our fundraising efforts, we will seek to establish a KJS Scholarship for a Trumbull High School student pursuing a degree program that will lead to a career in public service.

Continue to Recognize Exemplary Public Service in Our Community

The KJS Legacy Project strives to reward individuals who demonstrate the characteristics expressed by American University President Neil Kerwin in honoring Kevin on August 30th, 2015: “a deep commitment to undertake hard work without regard for the rewards of recognition or even immediate personal gratification that might be gained.”
