About Kevin J. Sutherland

From a young age, Kevin Joseph Sutherland demonstrated an immense interest in politics and public service. He became involved in local politics as a teenager, earned a college degree in Political Science at American University, and interned for Congressman Jim Himes during his senior year in college. His dedication to service touched the lives of many and it has inspired family, friends, and colleagues to create this foundation in his memory.

The Legacy Project

Throughout his adult life, Kevin Sutherland strived to make this world a better place by speaking out, empowering others, and preparing himself to participate in our democratic process. He was not in politics for personal gain or recognition. Kevin was pursuing a career in public service to serve - to help craft a more perfect Union for all our citizens. And so the KJS Legacy Project is being established to support others who will follow in his footsteps - to pursue politics for the right reasons.

Creating Opportunity

The KJS Legacy Project Project is proud to support two endowments at American University in Washington, D.C. The Sutherland family established the Kevin Joseph Sutherland Memorial Scholarship Fund to support students pursuing careers in public service through the School of Public Affairs. Kevin’s employer, New Blue Interactive, established the Kevin Sutherland Endowed Internship Fund to support students serving low-paid internships on Capitol Hill.

Recognizing Public Service

In addition to supporting future leaders by creating scholarship and work opportunities in public service, the KJS Legacy Project seeks to recognize people in our community who are already showing a dedication to serving others and participating in our democratic process. Kevin’s life story has already inspired an award given annually by the Democratic Town Committee in his home town of Trumbull, Connecticut.
