Democracy works best when government is populated with people who come from all walks of life and all backgrounds. America cannot reach its full potential if those at the top of the economic ladder have an automatic advantage when it comes to accessing public service careers. Kevin Sutherland saw firsthand how economic means dictated opportunity when he interned on Capitol Hill. Once he launched his career, he was dedicated to doing something about this problem, so the KJS Legacy Project is directly carrying out the work he intended to pursue. Here are a few of the outstanding students who are now a part of Kevin’s legacy:

Devontae Torriente, AU Class of 2018

Inaugural Recipient of the KJS Memorial
Scholarship in 2017.

Graduated cum laude in 2018 with a BA in Justice & Law. Currently in his 3rd year at Penn Law School.

“Kevin set a high bar for what it means to serve as a student leader at AU. His example served as an important guide to me during my time on campus…I remain grateful to be the inaugural recipient of the memorial scholarship. It helped make my college education more affordable and I know it will continue to do the same for the recipients who come after me.”

Gabriella "Gabbi" Salmon, AU Class of 2021:

Inaugural KS Internship Recipient in 2020.

Internship served in the office of Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander.

Graduated in 2021 with a BA in Political Science & Policy.

Currently working at the bi-partisan lobbying firm, Vogel Group.

“The Kevin Sutherland Internship allowed me to continue doing internship work while getting my undergraduate degree…Kevin sounds like he was a wonderfully brilliant young man with a love and passion for helping others. Receiving a scholarship in his name inspired me to continue that fight for him.”

Alex Russo, AU Class of 2020 & 2021:

AU KJS Memorial Scholarship Recipient in 2019.

Worked in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and currently working at the PR firm SKDK helping to plan America’s Semiquincentennial coming in 2026.

“It was a privilege to follow in Kevin’s footsteps during my college career, to receive the Memorial Scholarship and to serve in the federal government. I proudly display some of Kevin’s photos at my desk as a reminder of his love for our nation’s capital and of his faith in the good that can come from public service.”

“I am incredibly thankful for having been a recipient of the Kevin Sutherland Internship. The opportunity to work on Capitol Hill has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I sincerely hope that I can carry on Kevin's passion for and commitment to public service and I am grateful for this Internship for allowing me to do so.”
